I pioneered gridded population survey research and methods with the design of two open-source tools to select sampling units from gridded population data, and evaluating their accuracy and feasibility in computer simulations and field surveys.
GridSample R algiorithm: free, flexible, code available on GitHub, runs on your per PC, requires R statistical package and programming skills, documented in the International Journals of Health Geographics
GridSample.org: free, publicly available, click-and-point interface, no programming, linked with hundreds of existing datasets, runs very large and complex jobs on a super computer and emails you the results, hosted by Flowminder.org
